Monogram Marvels: What is a Monogram?

Let's answer the question: What is a monogram?

We asked a few customers and friends what a monogram is to them and received answers like: Initials, 3 letters, not a full name, etc.

Pretty close! says a monogram is “a design consisting of two or more alphabetic letters combined or interlaced, commonly one's initials, often printed on stationery, embroidered on clothing, etc.”

The word “monogram” is derived from two Greek words: mono, meaning single, and gram, meaning letter. It means that multiple letters were combined into one sign or symbol.

So what does this mean for us? Can it have 2 letters? 6 letters? Does it matter how they connect? In today's world, the correct answer is "there is no correct answer." It really all seems acceptable.

Types of Monograms:

When we take a look at the designs offered here at, we see a variety of styles and options. We label all of these marks as "monograms" on our website.

We have block letters that do not touch. Like our EG2004 Square Monogram Notepads.
