Here at StationeryXpress, we love using timeless, high-end printing techniques to make your stationery feel extra special. Two of our most popular personalization options are embossing and raised ink printing—and while both are beautiful, they’re made in very different ways. Here’s a closer look at what sets them apart.
Exquisite Embossing

Embossing adds a classic, luxurious touch that you can both see and feel. With standard printing, ink simply sits on top of the paper, so the texture of the print feels the same as the paper itself. Embossing is different—and it’s been a symbol of refined style for centuries.
This traditional process presses the paper between two custom dies, creating a raised impression directly in the paper. The result is an elegant, tactile design that stands out in all the right ways.
High-quality embossing is all about the details. The letters or design should have clean, sharp edges so everything is easy to read and looks polished. Our skilled craftspeople take great care with every piece to make sure it meets our exacting standards.
Here’s how you can spot truly great embossing:
-
Crisp edges on the front: The raised lettering or design should look sharp and well-defined. This takes extra care—especially with thicker paper—but it’s worth it. We use double-thick paper for folded notes and triple-thick paper for cards, and the difference is noticeable.
-
Deep texture on the back: Flip the paper over and you should see (and feel) a distinct impression where the embossing was pressed. A shallow or barely noticeable imprint usually means lower-quality embossing.
Raised Ink Printing (Thermography)

Raised ink printing—also known as thermography—creates a textured look using a special ink process rather than pressure. The result is shiny, slightly raised lettering that adds dimension and a touch of sparkle.
Unlike embossing, the back of the paper stays completely smooth. But unlike flat or digital printing, you’ll definitely feel the texture when you run your fingers across the design.
Here’s how it works:
First, your name or monogram is printed onto the paper. While the ink is still wet, a fine colored powder is applied. The paper is then briefly heated, causing the ink and powder to bond and rise. Once it cools, you’re left with a beautifully raised, slightly shimmery finish that really pops.
You can add your logo or just your text using both of these options!
