7 Easy Steps to Write a Thank You Note

Stationery Etiquette, Stationery No Comments

David Slavin, StationeryXpress.com

It’s easy to write a Thank You Note, be brief and be sincere!

Say “Thank You” with a personalized note, for a gift, for a friendship, for a favor, for a special event or family memory. Some Tips:

  1. Handwrite your thank you notes. It’s inappropriate to email a thank-you note. Handwritten notes suggest that you took the time to write the note.
  2. Select personalized stationery that reflects your personality. It says “Thank You” with style and grace. Stationery Xpress offers a complete selection of Personalized Thank You Notes. Personalized Stationery or Embossed Stationery with your name or monogram is absolutely appropriate for Thank You Notes.
  3. Use quality paper. Avoid large sheets of paper which are too big for your Thank You Notes. There are many Personalized stationery options including Note Cards or Folded Notes; Additional options include raised printing (Thermography) or Embossing (also referred to as Blind Embossed). Either option is appropriate.
  4. Simply start your note with “Thank You for…” and mention the gift or event. Three or four sentences should do.
  5. Mention something specific about the gift and how useful or appropriate it is or how much you enjoy it. Avoid saying too much, this is not about you! This is about expressing your appreciation and thanking someone for their generosity.
  6. Write from the heart. The best thank you notes are sincere and written in a conversational tone.
  7. Although anytime is a good time to receive a thank you note, it’s best to send the thank you note as soon as possible. A good rule-to-follow is to send a thank you note within 2 weeks of receiving a gift—for anything! Wedding Thank you notes should be sent approximately 2 weeks to 1 month after you return from your Honeymoon.

Handwriting a personal note is the only way to do it!

Stationery Style Guide

For an individual:
The traditional approach is to use the given name: First name, Middle name (or Initial) and Last Name. It is absolutely appropriate to not use all of the above or the middle name. It is also okay to use a nick-name.

For a couple:
Usually the man’s name comes first. However, it is appropriate for the woman’s name to be first, which is a more modern approach. A personal decision is whether to use “Mr. and Mrs.”.

For an Engaged Couple, prior to the wedding:
Generally, the woman’s name comes first until they are married. After marriage, the man’s is first.

Embossed and Raised Print Stationery

Embossed Stationery:
Embossed stationery is Raised letters or designs created by squeezing the paper between two heated dies. The name or monogram on the embossed cards is raised from the surface, “Embossed”. Stationery Xpress offers a complete selection of Embossed Stationery that includes Embossed Names, Monograms, Initials, Designs (Motifs) and Embossed Cards with Borders. Stationery Xpress also offers personalized stationery that includes embossing as well as Raised printing and foil stamping. Each design reflects the perfect personality, yours!

Stationery with Raised Printing “Thermography”:
Thermography is a fine printing process in which a printed image is dusted with a resinous powder before the ink is dry. The application of heat causes the ink and the powder to fuse and gives your personalized stationery the effect of engraved printing. Your name, monogram or initials is slightly raised and also has a sophisticated shine to the ink. Stationery Xpress offers a vast selection of personalized stationery with raised printing including, printed cards, printed foldnotes, letter sheets, gift cards and change of address cards. Treat yourself to the luxury of monogrammed fine writing paper and other personalized stationery.

Monogram Style Guide

A monogram is a design composed of the initials of a name and usually includes 3 initials. Typically a monogram is identified by a larger, center initial which always represents the last or “Family” name. If all the initials are the same size it is not considered a monogram, just initials. Personalized stationery monograms can be in classic script initials or in more contemporary typsestyles. Choose a stationery design that reflects your personality.

Monogram for an individual:
Left initial is for the First Name
Center initials if for the Family Name
Right initial if for Middle Name

Monogram for a couple:
Generally, the man’s name comes first:
Left initial is for the Man’s name
Center initial is for the Family Name
Right initial is for the Woman’s name.

Monogram for an Engaged Couple, prior to the wedding:
Left initial is for the Brides name
Center initial is for the Family Name
Right initial is for the Grooms name.

Place your Monogram on personalized stationery, embossed stationery, envelopes, gift cards, contact cards, napkins and coasters. Shop online at our site for great gift ideas.
